Loretta Smith Wilcox, 84, of the Horton Highway in the Pine Grove community, died Thursday at Laughlin Memorial Hospital. She was a daughter of the late James Luther and Virgie Light Smith and the widow of Andrew Verlin "Jack" Wilcox. Mrs. Wilcox attended Pine Grove Free Will Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She operated Pine Grove Market for a number of years. Her family stated, "The passage of Scripture from Proverbs 31: 25-26 is a fitting tribute to her: "Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the low of kindness." Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: Darrell and Brenda Wilcox of Pine Grove; her grandchildren: Paul Andrew Wilcox of Pine Grove, Teresa and Joseph Hradecky of Pennsylvania, Chad and LeAnn Dalton of Greeneville, Angela and Scotty Wedding of Chuckey, and Johna and Jimmy Harrison of Greeneville; her great-grandchildren: Shelly Wilcox, Devan Wilcox, Hunter Wilcox, Logan Hradecky, Corbin Hradecky, Mariah Hradecky, Holden Dalton, Hannah Wedding, Savanna Wedding, Sierra Wedding, Ashlynne Harrison, Caelyn Harrison, Christian Peters, Alyssa Peters, and Camryn Peters; a brother: James Luther "Sam" Smith of Kingsport; a sister-in-law: Fleeta Smith of Kingsport; several special nieces and nephews: Polly Bernard, Diana Smith, Janice Hass, Margie Sue Jackson, Marty Jackson, LB Jackson, Doug Jackson, Junior Jackson, Sue Dykes, John Smith, Ronnie Smith, and Danny Smith; and her special friend: Debbie Gilland of Gap Creek. She was preceded in death by two grandsons: Jeffrey Wilcox and Scott Peters; a brother: Thaskell "Jake" Smith; and four sisters: Ethel Archor, Betty Jo Jackson, Estelle Light, and Evalee Barrett. The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove FWB Church and other times at the home of Darrell and Brenda Wilcox. The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the church. The Rev. Wayne Waycaster, the Rev. Keith Williams, and the Rev. Pete Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in the family cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the church Sunday. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Smith, Josh Smith, Marty Jackson, Johnny Roberts, David Bright, and the Rev. Jerry Conkin. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. E.B. Smith, and the 4-West nursing staff at Laughlin Memorial Hospital. Jeffers Funeral & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
